I am guilty to have a pretty impulsive lifestyle. I used to buy things that I want, pretty much whenever I want. Recently, I try to rework my financial flow and be pretty savvy about my budget around beauty product.
I wear makeup mostly for myself and a little bit to look presentable for others. Doing makeup in the morning gave me a boost of confidence. Is it possible for me to leave the house without makeup? Absolutely. But I do enjoy the creation process as much as the result, so I would like to keep it as one of my morning routine.
Now that we need to wearing masks/face cover most of the time, the way we enjoy makeup start to shifting. We couldn’t show most of our face. Our lips are even covered unless we are in a dining setting. Our forehead and eyes are now the main tools for us to communicate our expressions.
My standard makeup routine usually consist of base makeup, blush, eyebrow, mascara, and a little bit of eyeliner. I still wear base makeup, but the need of having coverage was going straight out of the window. My favorite makeup product are blush, and I feel a little bit sad that I couldn’t really enjoy it anymore. Blush really make you look have some healthy, youthful, cheerful looks.
I have a short face so there’s not much area where I could show my makeup when my mask on. Once my mask are on, no joke, it will cover straight to under of my eyes due to the shortness of my face lol. My makeup have been centered around my eyes area due to this adjustment.
On this post, I would like to write about what makeup products I will keep using on my routine. The reasons why I choose these products are mostly because they are comfortable to wear (some makeup product could feel thick on the top of your skin) and also their staying power (I don’t really like to touch up during the day).
Usually, I like to have a pretty soft brow, but nowadays I try to give more definition by adding more color than usual. My product of choice are Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow pomade. Many people say it’s thick, and I kinda think the same way at first. But once you know how to use it with a light hand, you will be able to use it in a subtle way. I like that it stays put until the end of the day, and how it had a little glossy appearance that make my brows looks realistic.
I use Dipbrow Pomade in color Medium Brown. My skin tone color is olive, and I like how the color suit my skin tone. The product color itself is a greyish brown with a little bit warm undertone.
I previously got this product from Anastasia Beverly Hills salon in Seibu Shibuya. The brand had rebrand their self and now become Anastasia Miaray. They still had the same product range, but seems like the product that they offer, color wise, are more specific/cater to Japanese market. I would like to try it one day!
Finding a good mascara is a personal journey. My eyes are a little bit sensitive and quick to react when it comes to a liquid product that is applied very close to my eyeball. I used to be able to use Maybelline mascara, but unfortunately not anymore. I stab my left eye once with Maybelline mascara primer and end up at the eye doctor because it’s swollen really bad, and got a little bit paranoid ever since. The other drugstore mascara that is waterproof usually will itches really bad on me. I want to love heroin makeup mascara because everybody seems to love it, but my eyes were not having it.
After some research, I finally found what I could wear. And my bank account are not happy with it. I use a combination of NARS Climax and Shu Uemura Ultimate Natural Mascara. The NARS one had a travel size product, so I could save a little. But the Shu Uemura one only had a full size, so it’s a splurge.
I will go with the NARS one first, and then blend it with the Shu Uemura. The NARS mascara will give you fuller eyelash, meanwhile the Shu Uemura one give you natural appearance. It’s really beautiful when you combined it together. One thing that I would like to note is the Shu Uemura mascara dry pretty fast so you need to work quickly.
Just like mascara, I also need to find eyeliner that will not itches my eyes. I didn’t look up eyeliner as much as I look up for mascara, but one day I decided to research what eyeliner that is waterproof. And for what I could found around, it seems like Makeup Forever is the answer. Makeup Forever counter is not as much as other brand in here, so I need to check first the location where I can buy it. I do buy makeup online most of the time, but usually I will go to the counter the very first time, just to experience the product before making a final purchase decision. After that initial experience, I usually will repurchase the product at their online store.
And boy, this eyeliner stay on until you decided to take it off! It’s the best eyeliner that I have experienced so far. I go for a dark brown instead of black, because I want some more natural appearance. But I think there are not much difference compared with the black one. I initially want to go with lighter option of brown, but then I found out that they had glitter on it, so I choose this one.
4. Base Makeup
For base makeup product, I usually wear Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer. It’s very lightweight, only has a little bit coverage, and will be gone at the end of the day. I have no problem with it at first, but then I realize, due it’s lightweight nature, the product sticks to my mask a lot, even after I put some setting powder on the top of it. I decided that I need something with more staying power, and I find that their cushion foundation are better for that. I have been impulsively purchasing their Flores Lumiere Radiance Perfecting Cushion but never find a proper time to wear it. I’m glad that I’m now find a good use of it! I also find out that using Mac fix plus before applying the cushion foundation makes the product stay even better. I will spray Mac fix plus on my face first, push the fix plus to my skin with the cushion applicator, and then after the fix plus absorb to my skin, I will apply the cushion foundation. I do powder a little bit with Laura Mercier translucent setting powder, but only a tiny little bit and mostly just for my nose area.
Lip color product are the most tricky on whether or not we should wear in this current situation. I don’t like when I wear lipstick it’s ruined the inside part of my mask. I do try wear a liquid lipstick that technically will get dry really quick, but it still transfer to my masks somehow.
But then I remember seeing Kose lip gel magic product on the drugstore and start thinking to involve that product on my routine. The reason I never tap into this products is because I don’t like the idea of having some kind of top coat on the top of my lipstick (for example, lipgloss), it feels heavy and uncomfortable. But time has change and now I start to build a desire to use this product. I try to watch a few review and decided to get this product in their glossy options.
Btw if you are going to use this product for the first time, don’t try to put too much product on your lips because you might swallow it by accident. Just use one small drops for the top lips, one small drops for the bottom lips, and you are set. You can blot your lips if you want or need it, but in my opinion it’s better to leave your lips set for a few minutes. You can use the cool air from hair dryer to make the process quicker.
This product has helped to be able to use my current lipstick collection. So if you wear a mask but you still need wear lipstick, you don’t need to buy a specific new lipstick (Chanel Le Rouge Duo Ultra Tenue almost got me). Just add this product and your lipstick will set for the day!
And that’s it for today! I think right now is a good time to reflect what is necessary in our life. Makeup is one thing that obviously bring a joy, but should be re-think on how we should consume it nowadays. Let me know what you think and what makeup product that you still able to wear in this current situation!
