If we talk about affordable Japanese makeup, the first brand that comes in mind must be canmake! The price point for their product are always excellent and their product are always works, so it’s no stranger that they are basically everyone favorite in Japan. Their most popular product are cream blush (クリームチーク) and quad eyeshadow (there are many of them and most of people like them all). Other product that also popular are their marshmallow finish powder (マシュマロフィニッシュパウダー) and Quick Lash Curler (クイックラッシュカーラー) which is a mascara base. Their product carry a ‘girly, pop, and shiny’ concept, so that’s why they carry so many soft-tone feminine color on their product with shimmery / glittery finishes. They packaging are always fun and cute, which add more value to their brand.

There is a little bit interesting historical event when I do my research for Heroin makeup. One day I do google deep dive about Japanese makeup history, and I found this interesting document about Beni Museum https://artsandculture.google.com/exhibit/japanese-traditional-craft-beni-for-cosmetics/9AIC-_31O6pLJA. To make it quick, in Edo period, there are three color that Japanese woman use for makeup. White; for powder. Black; for eyebrow and tooth. And Red; for lips, cheeks, nails, and sometimes base makeup. Isehan, company that owns Heroin makeup, has been established since 1825, and they first start their business by producing a product called Beni, a Japanese classic red rouge from safflower that used for toning up lip and cheek color. It’s still available to purchase if you interested to buy (It will cost you ¥14,000)! The surface looks green, but it will turn red once you dilute the product with wet brush. The opacity of Beni will depends on how much water you use.

Okay, back to the regular program.

Heroine makeup are really famous for their mascara. Their mascara could stand tears, sweats, and break ups. Their most favorite mascara is Long & Curl Mascara Super Waterproof (ロング&カールマスカラ スーパーWP). Their eyeliner, Smooth Liquid Eyeliner Super Keep (スムースリキッドアイライナー スーパーキープ) are also a cult favorite.

Btw, the lady on the packaging reminds me of Eliza Leagan, the daughter of Leagan family who adopt Candy as her companion on Candy-candy comic. What do you think?

4. Kate

Kate is the Maybelline of Japan. Well, there is Maybelline in Japan, but Kate carry the similar youthful, strong, powerful spirit, but with less color on their packaging. If Kate is a woman, she’s going to be a sophisticated, fashionable young adult woman wearing power suit and black stilettos, ready to conquer the world. My friends swears by it’s eyeliner, meanwhile I really like their designing eyebrow 3D (デザイニングアイブロウ3D).
